Healthy Soul Food Review – Why Healthy Soul Food is Popular

Healthy soul food continues to increase in favor of traditional recipes of the past. Because more African Americans look to change to a healthier diet, this favorite southern cuisine continues to adapt to the demands of today’s weight conscious consumer.

Obesity continues to grow (pardon the pun) in America, especially in the Black community. That’s the reason for the huge push in changing the eating habits, seasonings and cooking techniques used to prepare the meals.

The threat of past menus filled with salt, fats, and other high risk ingredients, continues to give way to better ingredients for the health.

Soul food restaurants continue to experience growth especially in urban centers. For example, Atlanta, Dallas, Washington, D.C, Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago and other cities with large African American populations.

The meals roots go all the way back to slavery. Where items slave masters wouldn’t or didn’t eat, the slave consumed by necessity or convenience. As time passed, more creative techniques of cooking and preparing the meats and vegetables caused it to turn into a favorite delicacy.

Today these deep south recipes continue to grow in popularity for millions of African Americans and non-African Americans. Millions traditionally celebrate holidays and other special occasions by eating this well loved food for the soul, as it’s affectionately called.

The southern breakfast, lunch and dinner industry rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars in sales each year. The industry continues to grow as healthier marketing information and promotion goes out to the public. The results continue to confirm more people are eating it up, to the delight of restaurant owners.

African American chefs continue to include healthier ingredients to meet the needs and demands of a more health conscious consumer in cookbooks as well. Award winning and best selling titles occupy bookstore shelves across the country.

This quick growing demand of health conscious consumers has birthed a new niche for vegetarians who like the southern fare. This includes restaurants, diners, and books. There’s even a magazine that caters to the African American Vegans out there who like the deep south cuisine – minus the meat, a market segment that continues to grow everyday.

You can find dozens of brilliant sites where you can find soul food recipes and books online. Many include the history and other facts. Consumers continue to devour books, giving birth to an army of cookbook celebrities. Many authors host cable T.V shows, start award wining southern cuisine restaurants, and offer signature products such as barbecue sauce, seasonings, and desserts to name a few.

How To Pick Healthy Food Items as a Vegetarian

The other day I got ride from a female friend and on the way home, she offered to stop at her favorite hot-dog spot to grab a bite. She questioned if I wanted some, I declined; she smirked and said it was on her and I had to smirk back and tell her that I was vegetarian and really didn’t eat out anyway.

“You mean you eat NO flesh at all…? She insisted.

“Yep, that’s right…” I responded “But go on and eat your meal, don’t let me get in the way now”

Afterwards, she questioned me what do vegetarians have left to eat as far as nutrients are concerned and though I had vowed to not discuss my eating habits with people anymore, I obliged her this one time and my answers are the body of this article.

Quite simply, a vegetarian can eat anything that is not of animal origin and is mostly found in the produce section of the grocery stores.

Okay, to be more direct: I’m talking about Fruits, Vegetables (Leafy and Root Ones), Some Less Harmful whole grains and other permissible products such as Genuine Maple Syrup, Sea Vegetables, etc.

This category above will depict the eating style of what may be known as a vegan, but there are still some other types of vegetarians that do exist and they are as follows:

1) Pescatarians

The word “pescatarian” is occasionally used to describe those who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish. Although the word is not commonly used, more and more people are adopting this kind of diet, usually for health reasons or as a stepping stone to a fully vegetarian diet.

2) Flexitarian/Semi-vegetarian

“Flexitarian” is a term recently coined to describe those who eat a mostly vegetarian diet, but occasionally eat meat.

3) Vegetarian (Lacto-ovo- vegetarian)

People who do not eat beef, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish or animal flesh of any kind, but do eat eggs and dairy products are lacto-ovo vegetarians (“lacto” comes from the Latin for milk, and “ovo” for egg).

Lacto-vegetarian is used to describe a vegetarian who does not eat eggs, but does eat dairy products.

Ovo-vegetarian refers to people who do not eat meat or dairy products but do eat eggs.

4) Vegan

Vegans do not eat meat of any kind and also do not eat eggs, dairy products, or processed foods containing these or other animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin.

5) Raw vegan/Raw food diet

A raw vegan diet consists of unprocessed vegan foods that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).

6) Macrobiotic

The macrobiotic diet, revered by some for its healthy and healing qualities, includes unprocessed vegan foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and allows the occasional consumption of fish.

“So which are you?” She questions after I defined each of the types of vegetarians.

“A mucus-less vegan” I answered with a smile.

“And what is that?” she questioned flabbergasted.

“That I’ll tell you some other time…we’ve reached my apartment building and thanks for the ride…”

We exchanged smiles in an agreement to continue with the discussion…

Well, have you been able to figure out which vegetarian you may want to be?

Food for Thought: Why Foodies Should Look Forward to Holidays

July 10, 2010 by admin

It’s a truth worldwide – no celebration is ever complete without food. And it’s not weird therefore that most festivals – religious, social, political or whatever its genre might be has the concept of a principal food attached to it.

A further testimonial to this is the fact that nearly every social group across geographical locations has some festival that corresponds to its principle harvest. A major reason why Canada should have a separate Thanksgiving Day, apart from the traditional historical tales of origin of the holiday, is the overriding speculation that the country had its harvest at a close but separate period of time.

Whatever the reasons (food lovers, I guess, wouldn’t need one) the fact remains that feasting, from time immemorial has remained one of the principal attractions of any
celebration.

Here is a list of holiday foods for food lovers to look forward to –

July 4th – barbeque: The 4th of July celebrations are nearly incomplete without the customary Barbeque. In different recipies and cooking styles barbeques set our taste buds rolling on this day. Vegetarians and vegans aren’t left out either. Most well loved food joints have come up with special vegan and vegetarian barbeques to make their day too.

Thanksgiving – Turkey: Gobble! Gobble! Guess what? It’s the Thanksgiving turkey calling you out to have a turkey-fic time feasting with friends, family or your sweetheart. Thanksgiving instantly calls to mind the huge stout golden-brown turkey sitting clean on the Thanksgiving dinner table and stirring up the olfactory senses in its irresistible flavor. Yes, that’s just it. No Thanksgiving menu was ever complete without this stuffed bird featuring on it. Thanksgiving is Thanksgiving only with the excellent stout Thanksgiving turkey on its menu. So, the Thanksgiving turkey has gradually become one inextricably significant symbol of this holiday.

Christmas – Cake: Perhaps the most well loved holiday food worldwide is the Christmas Cake. Nearly every family in major parts of the world celebrates this day with a cake. Over years the Christmas cake has assumed paramount importance in the festivities of this event, so much so that it is now an vital symbol of the festival itself.

Sweetest Day – Candy: One of the classic recipes for Sweetest Day is the candy. Though the market is flooded with candy in all kinds of flavors and taste, but the fun and appeal of the home made candy is something else. All you need is milk, sugar, cocoa, stick oleo, vanilla and peanut butter, mix it all and boil for three to five minutes, then let it cool down and presto! You’ve got your own candy made at home. Wrap it in a flashy candy-wrapping paper and distribute to all of your candy loving friends and relatives.

Rosh Hashanah – Apple dipped in honey: Rosh Hashanah is observed as a holiday which should be celebrated with the entire family having elaborate feasts including the traditional foods. It is the time to delight in some of the soul food prepared with the like and best wishes. A special dish prepared with honey is made for the blessings for apples and honey exclusively on Rosh Hashanah. More modern versions of this traditional food incorporate special flavored honey or creamed honey.

Diwali ( India ) – Sweets : One of the long standing Diwali foods is the traditional sweet called Gujia, a tasty sweetmeat made from flour, khoya, a kind of hard, dried cream, sugar and raisins for toppings.

A similar delicacy, called Kheer is one of the most well loved recipes during Diwali, prepared from milk, lots of sugar and rice, it’s quite like whipped cream, but much richer and thick. This really yummy sweetmeat can be served garnished with cashew nuts, raisins and cardamoms.

One of the staple dishes on Diwali is the Malpua. This mouthwatering sweet is particularly well loved among the people of Eastern India. Made from flour, milk, curd and sugar its preparation is very similar to the cooking of pancake. When served with pista or cream, Malpua, can give your taste buds a joyride!

The most well known sweet of Diwali is undeniably the Laddu. Well loved among young and ancient alike, Laddu made from gram flour, ghee and sugar is the most common sweet as well. Chopped almond and raisins toppings add to its gastronomic appeal.

Eid -ul-Adha – Beef: The Muslims worldwide are as much zealous about the Eid-ul-Adha foods as they are about its rituals and customs. It’s very much an integral part of the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations. Every Muslim family takes fantastic care to prepare the exclusive dishes on Eid-ul-Adha. Sometimes even the whole family decides on what to include and what not. The thought is to make the menu over-the-top and include foods which are not regularly eaten on other ordinary days.

Starting with the main course to the deliciously delectable desserts, Eid-ul-Adha menu is sure to set your taste-buds craving for more! Most Eid-ul-Adha items are focused on meat. This meat at the centre of the Eid-ul-Adha menu is primarily the sacrificial meat of the Eid-ul-Adha ritual. By tradition, the Muslims give a part of the sacrificial meat to the poor on Eid-ul-Adha and share the rest with their friends and kins. Beef, of course, is the meat of choice! You can go for a number of toothsome preparations with beef like the beef balls, beef kababs, beef rolls, beef biriyani, beef stew and many more. Shahi mutton Biriyanis, rice dishes, Afghani korma, meatballs followed by the sweet gulab jamuns are often an Eid-ul-Adha favorite among the Muslims.

Have you secretly longed to be recognized for your daily hard work in the kitchen? Do you imagine yourself a gifted cook a la Martha Stewart (without the ankle bracelet)? Well, guess what? There is a quick and simple way to showcase your culinary skills and show your special recipes.

Although some people claim it is a piece of cake to make meals every day, the truth is, it can be exhausting and dull work. For example, after a long day at the office, sometimes you are too tired to choose on a TV show to watch, let alone choose what kind of meal to prepare. What is more, not everyone is naturally talented in culinary arts; for some, cooking a roast might as well be rocket science. But here is the excellent news–with modern high tech communication systems (namely, home computers), you do not need to be a master chef! Those who need a nudge and a few creative thoughts to get the pots simmering can access thousands of recipes and cooking tips online. Even a beginner can find what she needs to get started in the kitchen.

There is no time like the present to upload your family recipes and write down your tricks of the cooking trade. The reason for doing this is two fold. First, you can stop worrying about losing a recipe because they will all be safely stored in your computer’s memory. Second, you will be doing a fantastic service to the online community of “foodies” who are always keen for fresh dishes and new techniques to try.

Putting your family recipes online is a terrific way to organize your recipes, too. On your site you will be able to divide the types of food into different categories such as:

- Breakfast foods
- Lunch foods
- Dinners
- Snacks
- Cocktail party food
- Barbeque food
- Vegetarian meals
- Diabetic meals
- Summer treats
- Holiday food
- Rich desserts and low-cal versions

Your viewers will be able to pick and choose from these categories and within seconds they will be armed with a detailed recipe. You can take it a few steps further and offer a shopping list for each meal and helpful cooking tips to make sure the preparation goes as smoothly as possible.

For beginner and expert cooks alike, you can have a list of frequently questioned questions (FAQ) and also encourage viewers to email you directly with unusual queries. Perhaps you will even want to have an online forum where your viewers and you can conduct lively conversations about a variety of topics, ranging from where to get fresh produce, to what to look for when buying fresh fish, and the best kind of spices to use in a gumbo.

Posting your family recipes online and establishing an interactive web site makes a lot of sense. You will be making an electronic legacy for your own family members to delight in, and you will also be reaching out to the wider internet community. In today’s harried world where multi-tasking is pretty much par for the course and people tend to eat on the glide, your thoughtful recipes may be giving another family exactly what they need to come closer together.

The Portuguese went to far off lands and ruled several countries. They brought back some of the local recipes and ingredients and integrated them with their cuisine.

Portuguese like rich, filling and flavored cuisine that is cheap to prepare. They use a wide array of spices and other ingredients including vanilla, cinnamon, saffron, and piri piriâ??a small fiery pepper. Their cuisine reflects Arabian and Moorish influences. They, but, use these ingredients frugally. But, garlic and herbs like coriander and parsley in their dishes are abundantly used.

Lisbon cuisine is an epitome of the countryâ??s tastes.

Since they spend lots of their time on seas, Portuguese are very fond of eating fish and other seafood especially bacalhau, or salt cod, their national dish. The people have devised 365 ways to cook it, that is to say, they can cook bacalhau differently on each day of the year. They are also fond of eating octopus, hake, lamprey, a variety of shellfish and sardines, especially grilled sardinhas or assadas.

When you reckon about Indian food, the thought that ordinarily comes to mind is spice. Indian food is intended to energize the senses. Indian foods are recognized for their genuine taste and fragrance.

Spices such as turmeric, garlic, cumin, ginger, black pepper, cloves, fennel seeds, cardamom and mustard seeds denote Indian dishes for those familiar with Indian livelihood. The spices can be utilized uncut, ground, roasted or pan-fried. And some dishes consolidate them in the form of a creamy paste.

For example, there are those among the population that are banned to eat up roots or subterranean vegetables. Less than 30% of the people of India are traditional meat eaters. Regular diet be made up of honey, dairy product, fruit, grain, vegetables and meat.

Now certainly when eating Indian food, a cool beverage is an vital accompaniment. What all of us in the Western world accept is spicy is zip in comparison to the culinary spices in hot Indian food that is really cooked and eaten in India. That brings me to my lifesaver when I was exploring and eating around India….the Lassie. It is a dairy liquid which is sort of a cross between yogurt, fruit juice and flavoured milk.

So there is an abundent of Indian tastes to sample and I would whole heartedly direct you give it a go at some point in your life. But make sure to have a nice cold glass of lassie right next to you!!

Essentially vegetarian, a normal diet includes fruit, veggies, grain, dairy product, honey and beef. The foods include kebabs accompanied by rich gravies, apricots, plums, peaches and melons. Recent additions provided by western influence include tomatoes, chili peppers and potatoes. And the most obvious about Indian foods is the smell. Spices used include mustard seeds, turmeric, cardamom, garlic, fennel seeds, cumin, cloves, black pepper, and bay leaves.

traditionally, the various different foods are served in bowls on a large platter together with a variety of Indian bread, which is designed to be dipped into the bowls. This strategy implies that the dishes can be loved just about anywhere. Whether you are considering an elegant dinner while seated on plush cushions on the floor or a smorgasboard served in the middle of a challenging poker game, the foods are built to delight and stimulate. Poker players around the globe delight in Indian food to maintain energy levels and stimulate the mind.

What You Need to Know About the New Food Pyramid

Perhaps you have seen the ancient food pyramid in a newspaper or magazine or you might have seen it on the doctor’s surgery wall. There is now a new food pyramid, which is simpler to read and use.

The ancient food pyramid stacks four food groups on top of one another. The largest food group is at the base and this is bread, cereal, rice, and pasta. Next, up you have fruit and vegetables. The second from the top is dairy, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, and beans and right at the top, with the smallest space, is fats and oils. You can use this food pyramid to tell at a glance how much of each type of food you should be eating.

With the new food pyramid, there are downwards rainbow colored stripes symbolizing each food group. The new food pyramid also makes it clear how many cups or ounces of each food you should eat per day because not everybody is sure how huge a “serving” should be exactly.

How Vital is to follow the Food Pyramid?

Doctors agree that eating a balanced diet is excellent for your health. Combining grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy produce, and fats is nourishing and gives your body everything it needs. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you can still use the new food pyramid but you will need to substitute some of the items for alternatives, such as replacing meat with beans or pulses.

All Foods are allowed but Not Equal

No foods are banned from the new food pyramid but there are some foods, which should be eaten in moderation. If fried chicken is your favorite dish, it will not do you any harm to eat it. You will probably not want to eat it every day but once in a while is fine. Chicken is healthy and lean and fried chicken recipes contain some oil but it is fine to consume some oil each day. In fact, the body needs fats as well as other nutrients.

You might like to have a fruit and grain rich breakfast and a vegetable rich lunch to balance out your indulgent fried chicken recipe in the evening. Alternatively, you might want to serve it with corn on the cob, beans, or a green salad but there is no reason that you cannot delight in your favorite foods and be healthy at the same time.

Banning all fried food or sugars from your diet is going to make you feel deprived. Eating everything in moderation is excellent for you and is also enjoyable. Unless your doctor has given you a special dietary plot for health reasons, the saying “a small of what you fancy does you excellent” is very right and the body is sophisticated enough to extract the nutrients out of what you eat to use and send the waste on its way.

The main thing to know about the new food pyramid is that it encourages you to eat a balanced diet. “Balanced” does not mean a fried chicken in one hand and a pound of French fries in the other but it does mean that eating a wide range of foods is excellent for you.

So, if you were unsure about what the new food pyramid means, you can rest assured that your favorite foods are certainly still on the menu!
